We had just seen the movie “Elegy” starring Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz. An elegy is a song written for someone who has died. The story spoke to us and triggered much conversation and emotion. Penelope’s character, Consuela, said that “what she missed the most in their relationship were the things they never did.”

Early that next morning, Em sat outside playing some new music inspired by the story. Cheryl was in the upstairs bedroom listening as he played. When she came down to the studio, she went directly to the computer and started writing lyrics. The music was barely set, so we literally wrote the words and finalized the music simultaneously. Within hours, we completed the music, lyrics, and documented the harmony.

The spontaneous process spoke to us about how inspiring and intense movies can be. Magic simply happens around all of us when we are totally focused and engaged.
