about

Never Sleep is about “Finding the Dream.” The music documents our first year of rediscovering who we had become, unraveling the past, and developing new common ground, yet not knowing where the path would lead. We invite you to join us on this journey of self and partnered discovery. We offer this music and accompanying narrative as artistic disclosure. We hope that our story inspires you to find your own reflective moments and sparks of discovery within.

about

Cheryl and Emerson Martlage San Diego, California

At the age of 48, and after 25 years of marriage, we headed to a secluded town for 6 weeks, to create a new relationship and begin again.

When we arrived as if by magic, we co-wrote our first song ever— "Never Sleep," evoking the mystery and magic of the new adventure. Twenty years later, we're still making music. Join us on our musical storytelling as the adventure continues to unfold

Track Name: Never Sleep
Please tell that story
one more time
I long to hear those words

Please tell that fairy tale
"Once upon a time. . . "
Sometimes the ending’s really all
that I need to hear

So close your eyes
Stay safe within protecting walls
Go to sleep
Guarded by your nights

But I can’t sleep
For these walls were built for someone else
Not for me
I won’t sleep - never sleep

Who will save the day
Where’s my ever-after life
Is there magic captured in the pages there
If not, then where

Who will show the way
Where is my enchanted life
Is the poet disguised as a pawn or knight
A king or me

I’ll write my story
for the first time
The script and cast are new
Some say that fairy tales are real
Just once upon a time my time

I can believe - it’s true
Track Name: In Thin Air
When will I learn
How all the pieces fit
How to make sense of it
When will I learn

Learn how to sing, how to dance, how to wing
My way through the clouds on the wind
And when the wind stops
And everything stands perfectly still

I drop like a rock at a point in a web of silk thread
In thin air . . . in thin air

Build foundations of brown brick, free-formed
Pleat the walls to stand sturdy and true
Glaze ceramics of deep blue vivid green
Intense red, and pure white too

When will I learn
Life is a rendering
Life is surrendering
When will I learn

Learn how to speak, how to hear, how to seek
The answers to questions within
And when questions stop
And everything is perfectly clear

I drop like a rock at a point in a web of silk thread
In thin air . . . in thin air

I catch my breath
I stop to catch my breath . . . In thin air
Track Name: Sand Castles
I built my castles out of sand, and then
Everyday I took them high against the wind and rain
With every piece I made by hand, and then
Forced into the wall

I feared that it just might fall
I worried that it might someday fall . . . might someday fall

Then in the morning I would walk
Step-by-step I climbed the tower to the top
And on the landing I would stop, and then
I’d shout into the room

Please don’t fall
Please don’t ever ever fall

Then the wind drew near and it knocked the towers down
As the waves washed around the handmade walls.
The sand then gave way and it melted into ocean
So the castles made of sand disappeared
The castles fell down just as I had feared

Just as I feared

Now I build castles out of stone
And everyday I make them strong against the wind and rain
With every rock I choose by hand, and then place into the wall

I know that these stones won’t fall
It’s true these stones will never fall

When the wind draws near it will rage against the towers
As the waves wash around the handmade walls
The rocks interlock and won’t tumble to the ocean
So the walls will stand tall in the wind and the rain
Castles made of stone will always remain

Will always remain

Now in this place that’s made of stone
I face a window to the ocean so I can see
Where I can sometimes go alone, and then
I dream of castles yet to be.

Now they won’t fall
No they will never ever fall
Stone castles never fall
They never fall
Track Name: How Quiet the Night
I always knew you’d move away
but in the meantime there are things to say, and
I guess that our time is running low
Please don’t go

I need some conversation

Every time I look around this place
I can’t help it but I see your face, in
the doorways and the windows of the rooms
I resume

Reflecting days when you were younger

It’s the toughest when I reminisce
about the simple things I really do miss, like
your running-jump when I’d walk through the door
Run once more

I need a little jump start

I thought I needed the American Dream
and everything depended on me
That situation wasn’t quite what it seemed
since I never dreamed
how quiet the night, might be

Take all the money
Destroy all the treasures
Steal everything that you need

I hold the key to rooms
where memories are stored—
those voices at night
that quietly talk to me

I always knew you’d move away
but in the meantime there are things to say, and
I guess that our time is really running low
Please don’t go

I need some conversation . . . now

I’m in need of a little conversation
Let’s just talk a while
I hear the windows and the walls
that surround me

Those voices at night
That quietly talk to me
Track Name: Drawing Pictures
Just another day
No different than any other one
Hours slip away with the setting sun

Just another night
No different than any other one
Shadows cross the light
Our evening visit has just begun
It has just begun

Sneaking down the staircase and creeping ‘cross the floor
Looking ‘round the door case a little more
I glance across the table to catch her eyes in mine
I stare and then I smile and I start with my line
Start with my line

"Iris sit down at the table
Draw me a picture of you
Stay long enough ‘till I’m
Drawing pictures too"

Maybe I’ve been working here too long
Well I’ll draw a friend of mine
Come on make it quick then run along
But drawing friends will take some time...time...time
Take your time

I thought I gave her some time
I set aside a precious moment of mine
Was it by chance or by design

She gave me an hour as long as a day
She thought she’d draw close then go on her way
She knew exactly what I would say
I secretly wished that she would stay
I wished that she would stay

Maybe in your night time you’ve seen a child or two
Sneaking down the staircase and looking at you
Keep a pad of paper and a pencil by the chair
You never know when someone might spend some time there
Spend some time there

Children sit down at the table
Draw us a picture of you
Stay long enough ‘till we’re
Drawing pictures too

Just another night
No different than any other one
Time to turn off the light our work is done

She gave me a hug
Then slipped away so quietly
She left the picture and I noticed
The friend she drew looked a bit like me
It looked a lot like me
A lot like me
Track Name: Tuscan Hills
Under the Tuscan Sky where air is clear and blue is blue
I found this place made for me and you
And as I step inside I sense a timeless stone retreat
This is the place where I feel complete

I let the dirt collect beneath my fingernails in the Tuscan Hills

Now windows open wide, I sit and watch a single bee
As his daily rounds roll into centuries
And on my short stay here amid the quiet buzzing sounds
Just like the bee I make my daily rounds

I let the dust collect on my window sill in the Tuscan hills

If I should leave today and never pass this way again
Or watch the sun rest on the mountains edge
Or hear the song birds sing from hidden branches in the shade
I’ll not forget where my heart remains

I let the dust soak in as it lightly rains in the Tuscan hills

Under the Tuscan sky where air is clear and blue is blue
I found this place made for me and you
And as I step inside I pause a moment to retrace
That special stone where I see your face

I let the stone reflect like a window pane, in the Tuscan hills

I let the dust collect on my window sill, in the Tuscan Hills

I let the dust soak in as it lightly rains, in the Tuscan Hills
Track Name: Locks
When you come home don’t see the flaws
‘Cause I didn’t quite get finished with the flaws
When you come home don’t lock the doors
‘Cause the door doesn’t lock here anymore

I finished your present just the other day
I wrapped it in dull brown paper and threw it away
It took me four long years to look at it this way
To have you home

If one book is all you’ve read
Then one book is all you’ve said
Read two and three aloud
And the sharing is why we care
The caring is why we share

Passages open to new awakenings
Revealing truth and meaning that it brings
Pathways where music and poetry begin
Are they locked out or locked in

And lately things have changed a lot
My life has rearranged
One simple thing is true
It’s simple but it’s true
I love you

So when you come home don’t see the flaws
‘Cause I didn’t quite get finished with the flaws
When you come home don’t lock the door
‘Cause the door doesn’t lock here anymore

I took all the locks off the doors to open wide

Passages open to new awakenings
Revealing truth and the meaning that it brings
Pathways where music and poetry begin
Are they locked out or locked in

Are they locked out or locked in
Track Name: Walking the Pickets
Living on the front porch is easy
Sheltered from the wind and the rain...storm
Following the fenceline is something that will never feel like
Walking on the pickets
You’ll find me walking on the pickets instead

Walk on tip toe
Keep your balance
Don’t fall
Always keep your hands up in the air
Don’t ever look down

Walk on tip-toe . . . walk on tip-toe . . . walk on tip-toe

Searching for the freedom to wander
Restless longing, a careless whisper may call you out
Following the obvious answers comes easy
Simply walk through the gate but, watch your step

To another fence
To another gate

Jumping from point to point
Keeping my balance
Where I have drawn the line

Lines form a boundary
Inside and outside
I will not cross that line

Celebrate the fenceline
Appreciate the gate

Living on the front porch is easy
Stepping through the gate is the same old thing
Crossing to the outside is something that will never feel like
Walking on the pickets
You’ll find me walking on the pickets instead

Walk on tip toe
Keep your balance
don’t fall
Always keep your hands up in the air
Don’t ever look down

Walk on tip-toe . . . walk on tip-toe . . . walk on tip-toe
Track Name: Down to Me
It all goes on forever
Yet it all just passes by
I forget all of the subtleties
Compared to the vast blue sky

So many fierce diversions
From what I really want to say
The more drawn out the silence, you see
No one is listening anyway

But I should unclench my fist
And try to enjoy it

I don’t know what to make of this
Or where I’m coming from
Which path to choose
Or which path I’m on now

I’m so used to confrontation
I can’t find peace of mind
So now I’m leaving this place
I’ll take what I can find

And what a crazy closeness
That drives me further away
I find comfort in reflection
And some maroon in all the gray

But I should unclench my fist
And try to enjoy it

I’m on my way back home now
With real food and tranquility
This whole thing I’ve been living with
Is over so suddenly now

I must have clear vision
The hardest part to see
Is what kind of relationship
I have with me

It all comes down to me
It always comes right down to me
Track Name: Gracefully
If I wear your hat in the bright sunshine
Will it shade my blue-green eyes
Casting shadows across my face and down to my chin
Shading Gracefully

You give me everything I don’t have to ask
You recognize my face with and without the mask
With you as my guide wisdom whispers insights

If I wear your coat in the pouring rain
Will it keep my shoulders dry
Wrapping down and ‘round nearly touching the ground
Wrapping Gracefully

When I need someone, you are there for me
We are good to each other, for any reason
I can count on you, you can count on me
We are good for each other, in any season
Giving Gracefully

If I wear your shoes on my path each day
Will my steps be safe and sure
Taking me places I never imagined before now
Stepping Gracefully

All vision hope and fear you have heard them all
Seen each victory witnessed every fall
Yet you know what is real, when to think when to feel

If I wear my heart pinned upon my sleeve
Will you keep it safe from harm
Shielding by your hand
Guarding with your very own heart
My very own heart
Living Gracefully
Loving Gracefully

Gracefully
Track Name: Barcelona
Barcelona is a place I go
To make life easy and to take life slow
Where broken china rests on rich red soil
And spires soar higher than one can see
So I’m taking you there with me
I’m holding you close to me
Together we will be free
In Barcelona

I’m taking you there with me
I’m holding you close to me
Together we will be free

My home is yours
And I’ll take you where I’m going
I’ll tell you what I’m knowing too
There is a place in the box beneath the staircase
In the attic or a friends face too
In Catalonia

It took me a lifetime
To find this path back home, to me
I pieced it together
After spending time on my own

I just barely made it
In time to find the window at dawn
My soul was so hungry
It was nothing but skin and bone
My soul was so empty
It was nothing but skin and bone

Nothing but skin and bone
Spending time on my own
Finding my way back home

Barcelona is a place I go
Where I can remember all the things I know
Where broken china rests on rich red soil
And spires soar higher than one can see
So I’m taking you there with me
I’m holding you close to me
Together forever free

in Barcelona

I’m taking you there with me
I’m holding you close to me
Together forever free

in Barcelona
Track Name: Simple Plans
The best plans are the simple ones
That’s what we both knew
But we were so much younger then
Twenty-three and two

Create a home for a family
A boy for me, a girl for you
Searching for the secrets
That would make our dreams come true
Make our dreams come true

One and one makes five years pass
And we wonder how
There could ever be anything more
than we have now

The best plans are the simple ones
Time passed—in fact it flew
And we were somewhat older then
Thirty-three and two

Land a job for security
Some dreams would have to wait
Still searching for secrets
We trusted not too late

One and one makes ten years pass
And we wonder how
This need for security
Matters so much now

The best plans are the simple ones
Lived steady straight and true
And we grew even older still
Forty-three and two

Run the race to the finish line
Rewards to to the best
Focused on the future
While we laid some dreams to rest
We laid some dreams to rest

One and one makes twenty years
And we wonder how
Praise might just possibly count
To dreamers now

The best plans are the simple ones
Persistence pulled us through
Time has a way of catching up
With me and you

We are bound by experience
Belief and common ground
A constant search for questions
And the secrets that we’ve found
The secrets that we’ve found

One and one makes twenty-five
And now we know why
You believe in magic
And so do I

The best plans are the simple ones
Track Name: My Dream
My heart is beating to a rhythm deep within
A driving energy that calls me to remember
The subtle doubts and fears give way to confidence
Since it’s clear I always knew how
Somehow I always know why

That I am
You know that I am
I know I am
You know that I am

I went down to the basement to see what I could find
Stacks of books and boxes had collected over time
I rummaged through the remnants and the clutter that was left behind
The pieces formed patterns

My dream is my life
My life is a dream
My dream is worth living and so I am
I know that I am
I know I am
I know that I am

I climbed up to the rooftop to find what I could see
The mountains formed a backdrop and a breeze surrounded me
A leaf fell on my shoulder and I looked up into the tree
The leaves formed patterns

My dream is my life
My life is a dream
My dream is worth living and so I am
I know that I am
I know I am
I know that I am

My heart is beating to a rhythm deep within
A driving energy that calls me to remember
The subtle doubts and fears give way to confidence
Since it’s clear I always knew how
Somehow I always know why
That I am
You know that I am
I know I am
